It was an honour and pride for us to contribute to the 100 books in the 100th Year of the Republic project with the book Obesity and Metabolic Surgery. We would like to thank our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Rector of Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Nuri Aydın and Vice Rectors and our Dean Mustafa Sait Gönen for enabling us to contribute to this important project.

In the hundred-year history of the Republic, Turkish physicians have provided self-sacrificing services in the field of health, from the establishment of many hospitals and access to medical services, they have made outstanding efforts in public health and disease prevention.

Today, obesity is an important health problem covering the whole world. Despite the efforts made for its prevention, it is increasing rapidly day by day and physicians from many branches are involved in different stages of treatment. We hope that our book will guide our young colleagues who are interested in obesity and metabolic diseases and especially in Bariatric surgery and shed light on the problems they experience.

We dedicate our book to our beloved mother, Op. Dr. Ülkü Taşkın, who patiently and tirelessly supported us on our academic path and who was a light to our family in the light of the principles of the Republic.
