100 Years of İstanbul Faculty of Forestry
Forestry has always held vital importance throughout history for humanity. Recent global developments indicate that forest ecosystems will continue to play a significant role in the lives of societies in the years to come. The United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015, constitute a universal call to action consisting of 17 objectives. Forestry, the forest products industry, and the landscape sector play a crucial role in achieving many of these goals. A substantial portion of these goals is directly or indirectly related to the products and services provided by forest ecosystems. The realization of sustainable development requires the sustainable management of forestry, the forest products industry, and the landscape sector. In this context, the inevitable creation of educational and research programs to establish the scientific foundation of sustainable development is crucial.
Our faculty has a rich history spanning 166 years, witnessing both the Ottoman era for 66 years and the Republic era for 100 years, making it the sole Forestry Faculty in Turkey to have observed the entirety of our Republic's first century. Therefore, the history of our faculty is inherently tied to the history of forestry education in our country. In light of these historical experiences, it is deemed crucial to conduct scientific evaluations of our profession from the past to the future, taking into account contemporary developments, and to contribute to forestry education and practices by forming useful and new perspectives, thereby nurturing our graduates as more competent individuals for the future.
In this book, which was formed by reviewing and rearranging the papers presented at the workshop titled "Overview of Forestry in terms of Education, Training and Scientific Studies in the 100th Year of Our Republic" organized by the Faculty of Forestry between 5-6 December 2023, evaluations were made from past to future in order to give direction to the future in the fields of technical forestry, ecological forestry, socio-economic forestry, forest products industry, wood technology and landscape architecture. However, more importantly, the developments, scientific researches, education and training activities and publications in these fields have been scrutinized to shed light on these issues in the forestry, forest products industry and landscape sector in the 100th year of Republic of Turkiye. We hope this book proves useful to individuals working in the fields of forestry, the forest products industry, and landscape architecture.
