Elderly People Spend Money Too!
There is a significant relationship between the economic and social development levels of countries and the psychosocial status and care services of the elderly population. It is known that the elderly, who are disconnected from the productive position, experience the feeling of loneliness intensely with the transition to passive life. In this sensitive period, it is useful to investigate the changes in the consumer behavior of the elderly due to psychosocial changes. It is a known fact that the elderly in our country are afraid of spending money due to the economic deprivation they have experienced in the past, and that they constantly accumulate goods and money in order to keep their future safe. It is a positive behavior that they are preparing to compensate for some of the activities they could not do in their youth due to economic and social deprivation and the beautiful feelings they longed for but could not experience in their old age. Depending on the value given to the elderly in society, the social service activities and new policies developed by the social state for the elderly in terms of protection are very important for the elderly to feel safe. It has been observed that there are serious changes in the consumption behaviors of the elderly in the new order where economic, social and technological developments are developing and changing at a dizzying pace. Since academic studies in the field of aging and consumer behavior are limited, we believe that our scientific study will be a source for academicians and students who will conduct research and analysis in this field. In addition, it is a multidisciplinary study in terms of the synthesis of social services and marketing science, which are members of social sciences. While I spent many years as a social worker, manager and provincial director of social services in nursing homes, my curiosity and questions about the elderly's excessive accumulation of money, limitation in spending, consumer behavior intersected with the work done in this field by my daughter Guzide Oncu Pektas, who works as a marketing lecturer at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, and we decided to write our book titled "Elderly People Spend Money Too!". Ozlem Salman, a social worker who was my student for a semester, also participated in this applied book study and provided support. Ozlem Salman made outstanding efforts in the literature reviews published in the field of aging, in the examination of books written in this field, and in various qualitative-quantitative research studies. The fact that my daughter, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Guzide Oncu Eroglu Pektas, who is a faculty member at IUC, and my student Ozlem Salman are mentioned in the book, which we have written with a multidisciplinary approach and with great effort, gives me a special pride. I hope this work will set a good example for the younger generations. This group, consisting of our elderly mothers and fathers, who are the most precious of societies, should be the apple of the eye for both state institutions and businesses and brands. We should not forget that; As the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk said, "A nation's attitude towards its elderly citizens and pensioners is the most important criterion of that nation's ability to live." We should ensure that they live peacefully and comfortably until their last breath by taking them into life, not only on holidays. Finally, it is a source of pride and honor that our book "Elderly People Spend Money Too!" was published within the scope of the IUC-Cerrahpaşa '100 Books for the 100th Year of the Republic' project. Also, endless thanks to all our elderly participants who contributed to the survey in our research...
